A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the Edmonton community after a 17-year-old boy lost his life in a multi-vehicle collision on the Sherwood Park Freeway near 50 Street on Sunday morning, November 1, 2026.

According to the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), emergency crews were notified of the collision at approximately 10:00 a.m. The incident involved a Ford Ranger pickup truck travelling eastbound and a Nissan travelling in the opposite direction.
Police say the 17-year-old driver of the Ford Ranger lost control of the vehicle, causing it to cross into the westbound lanes, where it collided with the oncoming Nissan.
Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene, but tragically, the passenger in the Ford Ranger, also a 17-year-old boy, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The driver of the pickup truck, along with the driver and passenger of the Nissan, were transported to hospital as a precaution. Police reported no other serious injuries.
The Edmonton Police Service’s Major Collision Investigations Section is leading the investigation. Investigators have indicated that speed and alcohol are not believed to have contributed to the collision. The possible role of weather and road conditions has not been established.
The tragedy has also brought attention to the importance of road safety, particularly as winter weather creates challenging driving conditions across Alberta.
The loss of a teenager is devastating for family members, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew him. At just 17 years old, he had so much life ahead of him, making this tragedy especially difficult for the people closest to him.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking accident.
May his loved ones find strength, comfort, and support during this unimaginable time. Rest peacefully. Gone far too soon, but never forgotten.
