A tragic incident at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) has left members of the campus community shaken after a 19-year-old man died following a police response at a student residence on Monday night, November 2, 2026.

The incident has prompted questions about campus safety, a reported suicide, and the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death.
According to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Peel Regional Police were searching for a man suspected of assaulting a woman in Brampton earlier that afternoon.
Shortly after 9 p.m., officers located the man at a student residence near Dundas Street West and Mississauga Road, close to the university’s McLuhan Court residence complex.
During the police response, a gunshot was heard. Investigators subsequently found the 19-year-old man with what the SIU described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead early Tuesday, November 3.
The university issued a shelter-in-place order while officers responded to the situation, directing students and other campus occupants to remain in secure locations.
The emergency restrictions were eventually lifted after police determined that there was no ongoing danger to the public.
University officials cancelled classes on Tuesday in recognition of the distress experienced by students and employees.
Counselling resources were also made available to support members of the campus community affected by the incident.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has launched an independent investigation because Peel Regional Police officers were present in the area when the man died.
Four investigators and two forensic investigators were assigned to examine the circumstances.
Authorities have not publicly released the deceased man’s identity, and investigators have not established all the circumstances leading to his death.
The incident has generated confusion online because of the similarity between the abbreviations TMU and UTM.
Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) and the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) are separate institutions.
The confirmed November 2–3 incident occurred at UTM in Mississauga, Ontario, not at Toronto Metropolitan University’s downtown Toronto campus.
No corresponding suicide incident at Toronto Metropolitan University on November 3 has been independently confirmed.
As the investigation continues, the university community is being encouraged to support those affected and respect the privacy of everyone involved.
The tragic death underscores the importance of accessible mental health resources and compassionate support during difficult circumstances.
